Edinson Cavani has officially signed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United.

Having hit the ground running in English football with 15 strikes in all competitions, the Old Trafford faithful were delighted that Cavani had been persuaded into extending his stay at the club.

The Uruguayan poacher told United's official club website: “Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents.

Cavani renews with Man Utd

"I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things.

“From the very first moment that I arrived, I felt the confidence of the manager. As a player, this belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football and I want to thank him for that.

“I have been touched with how much the supporters have wanted me to stay, and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy with my performances on the field.

Have Man Utd made the right call?

"I’ve not yet been able to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd and that is something that I cannot wait to do.”

So, is it the correct decision or has Ed Woodward simply bowed to the hype? Fear not, United fans, we're in the latter camp because Cavani has been truly brilliant when called upon in 2020/21.

Even before his flurry of finishes at the business end of the season, Cavani established a penchant for popping up with critical strikes and his goal-scoring appetite is reflected in the statistics.

Cavani's lethal finishing in England

In fact, when Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville gave their thoughts on Cavani's extension during Monday Night Football, they managed to unearth a fantastic statistic about the United hitman.

That's because Sky Sports calculated that Cavani had the second-best goal conversion rate of any Premier League player with at least six goals this season - and naturally, that's excluding penalties.

With nine goals and a conversion rate of 29%, United's new signatory is second only to Tottenham Hotspur's Gareth Bale and you can check out the complete top eight graphic down below:

It's simple: Cavani knows where back of the net is.

A key player for Man Utd

Ok, sure, it's clear by Cavani and Bale leading the way that not starting every single game has its advantages when it comes to conversion rates, but let's not split hairs about his brilliance.

At 34 years old, it's only natural that Cavani isn't going to burdened with as much game time as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, but boy does he make the most of his cameo outings.

So, even if Mason Greenwood or Anthony Martial become the focal point of United's attack next season, they can at least rely on having one of the Premier League's most lethal forward as back up.
