Southampton are hopeful Alex Chamberlain will be fit for their opening game of the season against Leeds.

The teenage winger, a transfer target for Arsenal, missed Saints' 2-2 friendly draw against Yeovil at the weekend with an ankle injury.

If Chamberlain recovers, boss Nigel Adkins will have a fully-fit squad for Saturday's curtain-raiser.

"The objective is to arrive at the first game of the season with everybody fit and available for selection," said Adkins.

"As we stand now there's only young Alex Chamberlain who has picked up an ankle injury which will hopefully be resolved by the weekend.

"So from that point of view we've achieved what we set out to do and we're really pleased about that."
