Russell Martin hopes a strong showing for Norwich in the Barclays Premier League will help boost his Scotland ambitions.

The 25-year-old full-back made his senior international debut in the Carling Nations Cup against Wales, but has not been included by Scotland manager Craig Levein for next week's game with Denmark. Martin, though, hopes that once he gets some more regular Premier League action under his belt, it will not be long before the Scotland call comes again.

"I was disappointed when the squad was announced not to be in it, but (Alan) Hutton has proved himself at that level and obviously (Steven) Whittaker has been playing for the last couple of weeks. Hopefully I will play some games down here and do all right and force my way back into it," Martin said in the Eastern Daily Press.

"Every week is going to be tough, but coming up against people like (Gareth) Bale and (Ryan) Giggs is the reason why you play football.

"It is going to be a test when you come up against the best players in the world week in, week out."

Manager Paul Lambert has taken Norwich back up from npower League One in successive seasons, and has moved to reinforce his squad with seven summer additions.

However, striker James Vaughan, signed from Everton, and centre-back Elliott will miss the start of the season after picking up minor knee injuries during a training camp in Germany.

Norwich drew 1-1 with Real Zaragoza in midweek, and Martin is confident the Canaries have what it takes to be competitive once the action starts at Wigan next weekend.

"There is no fear or trepidation about the squad. We want to prove ourselves and every player has something to prove," he said.

"That is why we have got success these last two years and hopefully we can do the same. The manager has said we have worked so hard to get here, just carry on doing the things that got you success and I am sure we will be fine."
