Not happy with his ten acquisitions so far this summer, Steve Bruce has earmarked Craig Bellamy as the missing piece in his Sunderland puzzle.
After the sale of Jordan Henderson to Liverpool, Bruce delved into the transfer market, bringing in the likes of Connor Wickham, Craig Gardner and Manchester United pair Wes Brown and John O'Shea.
The departure of Steed Malbranque has created the opportunity for Bruce to bring another new recruit to the club, and he sees Bellamy as a potential new signing.
"Craig Bellamy is a possibility. He can play wide left and up front so we'll see," Bruce said. "I haven't got a wide left player, not a natural one, although we've got people who can play there.
"Steed leaving frees up a wage for us. We're all looking at Manchester City because they've got some great players who can't even get in the squad."
Bellamy spent last season on loan at Cardiff City, where the Welsh side fell short in their bid to reach the Barclays Premier League, as they crashed out of the Championship play-offs to Reading.
Such are the Welshman's wages and fee that he's yet to make a return to the Cardiff City stadium and has been linked with a move to the likes of Celtic.
Bruce's revelations come as he assures his new signings that they won't be first choice going into the club's first league game of the season against Liverpool.
Seb Larsson is expected to take his place in the side, alongside defender Brown, but the likes of David Vaughan, Keiren Westwood and Ji-Dong-won are far from certain of their places in the starting XI.
"It's important for the new guys to settle in, but it's important to remember too that without the eight new guys, the team here last year finished 10th," said Bruce. "If they think they're just going to walk into the team, they're wrong.
"I've got in mind the team I'm going to play at the weekend, and in my mind it will be the best team and the best formation to get us a decent result at Anfield."
