Despite opening his Blackburn Rovers account with a goal in the club's emphatic win over Kilmarnock in their final pre-season friendly before the start of the Barclays Premier League season, Jason Roberts is adamant he can help new signing David Goodwillie settle in at Ewood park.

Goodwillie marked his move from Dundee United with his first Rovers goal, and supporters are already waiting to see if the Scot can become a star in the English top flight.

And Roberts, who hit two himself against their SPLopponents, is looking forward to watching Goodwillie develop into a top Premier League player.

"Only time will tell how David finds the switch to England," he said. "Notoriously it is a hard change over from many leagues into the Premier League, but he has shown the qualities in the Scottish Premier League and it is a good division.

"He obviously knows where the net is and if he can translate that to the Premier League then we have a player on our hands.

"At his age, he has an opportunity to learn from the boys around him and learn from the manager and have an opportunity to progress. The ability is there and hopefully it will come through."

The likes of Barry Ferguson, Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller have moved from the SPL to the English leagues and made varied impacts at their new club, and to prevent Goodwillie going down a similar avenue, Roberts is planning to take the striker under his wing.

"From my point of view it is all positive when you have good young players coming through," Roberts continued. "We are very, very lucky to have such good young players at this club.

"David Goodwillie will add to that. It is exciting and I see my job as not only to compete with him but to help him come through and be the player we all hope he can be."
