Chelsea are ready to bid £17.5 million for Porto wing-back Alvaro Pereira, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The Uruguayan defender, who stared at last year's World Cup for the Copa America champions could join The Blues following the departure of Yuri Zhirkov, who returned to Russia at the weekend.

The new Chelsea manager has chosen not to delve into his form side, with whom he won four trophies with last season, for transfers this summer, however the proposition of having Pereira at his disposal may be too good an opportunity turn down.

The versatile left sided player, who can also play at left midfielder is very much in the mould of Zhirkov, who failed to make an impact during his time in Chelsea.

If Pereira did make the move to Chelsea, it could spark an exodus from Stamford Bridge, with the likes of John Obi Mikel and Jose Bosingwa tipped to leave.

Porto's recent signing of Alax Sandro, a like-for-like replacement for the 25-year-old, and brought The Blues closer to completing a deal for Pereira.
