West Brom head coach Roy Hodgson declared his squad for the new campaign was "close to being complete" after signing striker Shane Long from Reading.

Long has moved to The Hawthorns for an undisclosed fee believed to be an initial £4.5million and rising to what would be a club record £6.5m. The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international - in action for his country on Wednesday night against visiting Croatia - is Hodgson's sixth signing of the summer.

Long has signed a three-year contract with an option for a further 12 months and Hodgson said: "Many other clubs have shown an interest in Shane and it is great that we have managed to acquire his services. "

He added: "With the signing of Shane, our squad is looking close to being complete."

Albion have also signed Ben Foster - on loan from Birmingham - Zoltan Gera, Billy Jones, Marton Fulop and Gareth McAuley during the current transfer window.

Long will train with his new team-mates for the first time on Friday and could make his debut in Sunday's home Barclays Premier League clash with champions Manchester United. Hodgson is hoping Long will fulfil his potential while with the Baggies.

He said: "Shane is one of the most talented young strikers outside of the Premier League.

"He is a goalscorer and a hard-working player who has a very good attitude to the game.

"The great thing about him is that even though he is still only 24, he has six years' worth of experience of Premier League, Championship and international football and has margin for improvement in his game.

"We now hope to see him fulfil that potential over the next few years at West Bromwich Albion."
