Chris Riggott has completed his return to Derby by signing a one-year contract at the club where he began his career.
The 30-year-old has been training with the Rams over the summer as he works his way back to full fitness following back surgery at the beginning of the year.
Riggott has been plagued by injuries in the past few years and, therefore, his deal is based on appearances.
"He is delighted with his back and so are we," said manager Nigel Clough. "We are just going to have to be patient with the secondary injuries he is likely to pick up after playing so little football."
Riggott came through the youth system at Derby and made 100 appearances for the club before moving to Middlesbrough in 2003.
He was not involved in the Carling Cup defeat to Shrewsbury on Tuesday night due to an Achilles tendon problem which will take about a fortnight to heal.
