Arsenal target Joey Barton is the subject of interest from Wigan, according to the Journal.

Barton has fallen out of favour with Newcastle over the past month, and the club have officially allowed the controversial star to leave for free if another club is willing to take him on.

Arsenal have been connected to Barton on a few occasions, and while the possible signing has surprised pundits and fans alike, reports have continually sprung up insisting that the Gunners have made enquiries.

Arsenal are said to be looking to purchase Barton in a desperate bid to end their now six-season long trophy drought.

But now rumours have emerged speculating that Barton is fielding interest from Wigan, and may make the move to the club if they can guarantee the midfielder a long term contract.

Barton recently admitted that if a club could offer Champions League football, he would jump at the chance to join, putting Arsenal at the forefront to sign the 28-year-old, but the Gunners seem to have cooled their interest in Barton lately, leaving Wigan to make their move.
