Scunthorpe v Newcastle
Glanford Park
August 25, kick-off: 19:45
Carling Cup second round

Oliver Norwood will is available for selection after joining Scunthorpe on loan from Manchester United.

Niall Canavan looks set to start alongside Michael Nelson at the back, with Paul Reid out with a groin injury.

For Newcastle, Alan Smith could potentially play alongside Dan Gosling in midfield, while Haris Vukiv, Steven Harper and Mehdi Abeid are all likely to feature.

Joey Barton will be left out as he nears a move to Queens Park Rangers.

Pardew ready to ring the changes

Alan Pardew is considering wholesale changes for tonight's Carling Cup clash against Scunthorpe, which would mean a debut for summer acquisition Sylvain Marveaux.

The former Rennes winger spent the majority of last season on the sidelines with a knee injury and, thus, has unsurprisingly failed to reach peak fitness since moving to St James' Park.

But Pardew could give the French filer an opportunity to prove his worth at Glanford Park, although the Toon boss is keeping his cards close to his chest.

“I won’t talk about him in reference to the Scunthorpe game, but since he’s been here, he’s struggled with his groin situation because he’s lacked football," Pardew said.

“He’s slowly but surely getting there. We know he’s a very good player and I think he’ll certainly be ready to play soon.”

Alan Smith and Dan Gosling are also tipped to start in a midfield minus QPR-bound Joey Barton, although Pardew won't be taking Scunthorpe lightly.

He added: “I’ve thought about the team. I’ve also looked at Scunthorpe and they’re a tough side. Hopefully, I’ll pitch it right."
