Watford manager Sean Dyche was pleased with the quality and spirit in his side as they came from behind twice to draw with Birmingham at Vicarage Road.

A late goal from Chris Wood, after Marvin Sordell had cancelled out Adam Rooney's first-half opener, looked enough for the Blues to take the points in the npower Championship. But Watford salvaged their first home point of the campaign when Boaz Myhill failed to hold Sordell's rasping long-range effort and Martin Taylor nodded in.

When asked if he was pleased with the spirit his side had shown, Dyche said: "Spirit's a vital ingredient when you're the underdog most weeks and it is a valued ingredient, but I thought the quality of our performance, in the second half particularly, was excellent."

Sordell showed why he has been called up to the England Under-21 squad for the first time by scoring the equaliser and then unleashing another fine effort to help earn a point.

Dyche said: "Players leave and new players come in or players around the club get a chance to step on and Marvin is a quality player, he's a quality young man and he's got a lot to offer.

"He's growing, he's developing, there's still things in his game that need work, he knows that, but today he slotted one with his left foot, he's hit an absolute piledriver with his right foot which Martin Taylor's kindly stepped on to and nodded in the corner."

Birmingham manager Chris Hughton said that the outcome for his team felt "more like a loss than a draw".

Hughton said: "We knew that Watford would have to come out in that second half and push, and of course what they did do was play a very direct game. And when you play against that type of game you've got to be able to deal with it. I thought for the large majority of the game we dealt with it and dealt with it very well.

"Having got back into the lead so close before the end of the game, at this moment it's just very disappointing that we gave away what I thought was a soft goal.

"I couldn't have asked for any more for the players and the effort that they put in and that's what makes it even more disappointing. It's a very disappointing changing room in there that should be a happier place."
