Arsenal have made a last-minute enquiry for Fiorentina midfielder Juan Manuel Vargas, according to Sky Sports, with the 27-year-old set for a transfer tussle between the Gunners and Liverpool.

Vargas has starred for Fiorentina since he signed to the Serie A side in 2008, and as a result has attracted attention from numerous European clubs.

Liverpool have been connected to Vargas in particular, with Manchester City also reportedly monitoring the situation.

And with the transfer deadline set at 11pm tonight, Liverpool are quickly trying to shore up last minute deals, including signing Sebastian Coates last night, as Kenny Dalglish continues his spending spree to bolster the Liverpool squad to challenge for trophies once more.

Arsenal have moved to make some big deals in the transfer window after the Gunners were defeated 8-2 to Manchester United on Sunday. Arsene Wenger has reportedly set a goal to spend a large portion of the £50 million acquired from Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri’s sales, and wants to bring Vargas on board at Arsenal for around £12 million.

Vargas’ versatility in midfield and defence is said to be part of the reason why Arsenal are desperate to get hold of him, though with Liverpool still hopeful of securing a deal, a tug of war over the Peruvian could take place over the next few hours.
