Jack Wilshere has jumped to the defence of Yossi Benayoun, amidst allegations by some journalists that Arsenal should have gone for alternative midfield options.

Ian Dowie on Sky Sports News was particularly critical of the loan signing, but Wilshere defended the Isreali.

'Disagree with Ian Dowie. Do you want Arsenal to buy Messi? Benayoun will create and score goals for us #justsayin,” Wilshere tweeted.

Arsenal made five signings over the final 24 hours of the transfer window, with Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Park Chu Young and Andre Santos joining the Arsenal squad yesterday.

Wilshere tweeted his delight at Arteta joining the North London club, saying: “I am glad Arteta has signed for us! He was one of the best players I faced last season and was not looking forward to playing him again!”
