Comolli: We have tremendous backing

As the transfer window slammed shut late on Wednesday night, it marked the end of one of Liverpool's busiest periods of exhaustive activity in the market for many a year - with seven new faces arriving on Merseyside, as well as a host of names heading through the Anfield exit door, either on loan or permanent deals.

After business was concluded for the year, it provided an opportunity for Reds director of football Damien Comolli to reserve special praise for the men who made it all possible - providing the funding for the club's new look squad.

Liverpool owners John Henry and Tom Werner, the marquee men of Fenway Sports Group have been commended by Comolli for their unwavering trust, and bravery in allowing him to reshape the first-team during the summer window.

"It's difficult for me to put into words what they gave us throughout the summer," he said. "Their support was absolutely tremendous, in the down times and in the up times.

"When they needed to invest money we didn't think they'd have to, John and Tom were unbelievably helpful. I think we are very lucky to have these owners because people need to realise a lot of owners would have said the squad is too big so you need to reduce it, and then when you've done that bring some players in.

"But that was never the approach they had. They were happy to take risks and happy for us to spend the money, they were happy to support us and to trust us as well."

After the January arrival of Luis Suarez (£24million) and club record signing Andy Carroll (£35million), Kenny Dalglish has further strengthened his side over the summer with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Alexander Doni, Stewart Downing, Jose Enrique, Sebastian Coates, and a deadline day swoop for Craig Bellamy, overseeing a complete overhaul of the playing squad.

"I told them in the summer we need to buy players first and towards the end of the window there would be a lot of movement with players going out," Comolli continued. "And they were very, very brave to accept that, having had no experience of a similar transfer window.

"From the outside it might be difficult to understand, but from my side their support was absolutely tremendous."
