Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has confirmed he made an unsuccessful attempt to bring Rangers midfielder Steven Davis back to the midlands club before the transfer window closed.

Davis moved from Villa to Fulham four years ago in a £4 million deal before making the switch to Ibrox after an initial loan period.

McLeish said: "Steven Davis is a Rangers player. We asked about him, but we know how much he means to Rangers. We never pursued it because they made it clear he wasn't for sale."
