Smalling targets United greatness

Although Chris Smalling is only in the fledgling years of his career, the Manchester United defender has already decided he wants to remain at Old Trafford for life.

This is likely to be music to the ears of Sir Alex Ferguson with all the signs pointing towards an illustrious career for Smalling as he continues to make great strides for club and country.

The 21-year-old was handed a senior England debut in Sofia last Friday, and followed up an accomplished display with another error-free performance against Wales two days ago.

It is perhaps Smalling's versatility that marks him out as a player with the potential to have a significant impact in the next few years, with the former Fulham man equally as competent at full-back or in the centre of defence.

Smalling is certainly thriving in the somewhat unfamiliar role on the right and his recent form has filled him with confidence and optimism, while he has thanked his manager for sticking by him.

"I don’t look too far ahead but I hope I can really get an established career and hopefully stay here for the rest of my life," Smalling told Inside United.

"I want to get more and more games as it goes on because I really feel part of this club. I’m really enjoying my football at the minute. The manager’s got full faith in me and I want to reward that in the years to come."
