Delvin Ndinga has revealed that both Newcastle and Tottenham were chasing the Ligue 1 midfielder in the transfer window, but he decided to stay in France.

Ndinga has starred since moving up from the B team to the senior Auxerre side, but the 23-year-old wants to prove himself in France before heading to England.

"I preferred to stay in Ligue 1 for this season," he said.

"I had contact with many foreign clubs like Tottenham, Newcastle and Sevilla and they requested information about me.

"Some made offers but we decided to stop the subject for a year. First I want to prove my worth in the French league."

Newcastle had been chasing multiple targets in preparation for the end of the transfer window, but failed to land a striker or a replacement for the outgoing Joey Barton before deadline day.

Tottenham, meanwhile, were hoping to bolster their midfield in order to challenge for Champions League qualification once more.

But now both Newcastle and Tottenham will have to wait a year to land Ndinga, and should his good form for the French side continue, his value will only increase.
