Rochdale boss Steve Eyre could scarcely conceal his delight as his side secured their first league win of the season with a 4-2 victory in their Lancashire derby clash at Bury.

The goals flowed at Gigg Lane as the visitors raced into an early 3-0 lead courtesy of Ashley Grimes, Marcus Holness and Bury old boy Nicky Adams, who was later sent off after picking up a second yellow card. David Ball added a fourth Rochdale goal shortly after half-time, while Bury's consolation strikes came from Mike Jones and Andy Bishop.

After picking up his first maximum points haul of the season, a delighted Eyre said: "Of course it's always nice to get a good result in a derby like this one. It will mean so much to our fans."

He added: "Bragging rights will have been secured and we can move on to the next game in terrific spirits. All the players are buzzing back there - it just goes to show how much this victory means to them too.

"There's been talk leading up to the game, but I didn't really want to get involved in any of that for the players' sake. I knew full well we had a game to win, so it just feels hugely satisfying now.

"I'll go out and have a drink, but the hard work must go on, starting on Sunday. We need to start pushing up that table.

There was bitter disappointment for Bury boss Richie Barker, who said.: "It's been a hugely disappointing afternoon all round for us.

"I must admit I felt good and really positive going into it, but maybe the occasion got to one or two players. And it was a big occasion.

"The fans have flocked here and at least they've seen the players put plenty of effort and endeavour in. That's all I can ask for I suppose.

"We'll have to get over this quickly though. There's plenty more big games to come as we head towards the middle of the season and we know we've got to start stringing a few results together."
