As Newcastle United's search for a talismanic striker continues, Leon Best is ready to step up to the plate and fill the void left by the January sale of Andy Carroll reports

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international boasts an impressive goalscoring record in the Barclays Premier League, and feels he is ready to make the infamous No.9 position his own.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew did his utmost to bring in a number of forward targets to St. James' Park this summer, but Newcastle failed in their attempts to sign Kevin Gamerio, Gervinho, Mevlut Erding, Modibo Maiga and Bryan Ruiz.

While Best has spent much of his Newcastle career sidelined by injury, he believes the time has come for him to make the most of the opportunity that has come his way.

"I have not played that many Premier League games, but it's good for me because the games I have played in, I have scored in," he said. "It's a good ratio for me and I intend keeping up that goals-to-game ratio the same.

"I have had no injuries [this season], touch wood, and got some goals as well, so I am very confident."

With eight goals in ten Barclays Premier League starts, it is no wonder that Best is left scratching his head as to why he hasn't received more recognition for what he has achieved up until now.

And reflecting on the numerous names that were linked with a move to the north east, the Nottingham-born striker insisted it didn't change his situation and he would keep on working hard for Newcastle United.

"You have just got to get on with it," he continued. "That's part of football.

"Whoever is coming to the club, they are to make the club better and make the team stronger."
