Arsenal have reportedly held discussions with Manchester United target Mateo Kovacic over a potential move to the Emirates Stadium.

According to talkSPORT, the north London club have been in talks with Dinamo Zagreb over the potential January acquisition of the highly-rated 17-year-old midfielder.

However, sources in Spain have claimed that United are also pursuing Kovacic, and will send Old Trafford scouts to Zagreb to run the rule over the teenager as Dinamo take on Real Madrid in the Champions League.

United are also said to be pursuing Kovacic's teammate Mario Situm, and Sir Alex Ferguson's spies are set to compile reports on the Croatian duo.

Meanwhile, Juventus are expected to contest Arsenal and United in the race for Kovacic at least, although the Gunners appear to be making the early running.

Arsene Wenger is still on the lookout for midfield reinforcements and, despite Kovacic's tender years, he is being allowed to gain vital experience.

Playing against the likes of Mesut Ozil and Xabi Alonso will provide the youngster with his sternest examination yet, and Arsenal and United will be keeping a close eye on his performance.
