Champions League: The good, the bad and the ugly

Football News

The Good:

Ivan Perisic: With Arsenal failing to wilt under constant Borussia Dortmund pressure, it was bound to take something special to draw the German champions level. Ivan Perisic had barely been on the pitch 20 minutes before he unleashed a left-footed volley after Kieran Gibbs' clearance, which flew into the far corner beyond a motionless Wojciech Szczesny. A goal fit to win any football match only salvaged a point for the hosts, but it served a warning to the remainder of Group F that Dortmund can strike from anywhere

The Bad:

Helton: The error prone Brazilian goalkeeper was up to his old tricks again on matchday one, with another woeful bit of handling to allow Shakhtar Donetsk to take the lead. The preverbal teflon glove baring custodian was left wishing he'd paid more attention during catching practise as he allowed Willian's shot to squirm through his grasp only for Luis Adriano to poke home. Helton briefly stared into the turf searching for his contact lenses as the Russian's celebrated, before being bailed out by his teammates in the second half.

The Ugly:

Jeff Stelling: We may have had a flurry of red cards upon the return of the Champions League, but frankly nothing compares to the ugly scenes that greeted our screens during Sky Sports' coverage this week.

Now I appreciate tables have become common place in football punditry, and honestly it's a shame the BBC don't give Alan Shearer one to hide behind instead of the chaise longue he shares with Alan Hansen on a Saturday evening, but using one, for no obvious reason, is shameful.

The table that now accompanies Stelling, apart from looking like it's permanently fixed to the rest of his body like Professor Charles Xavier, looks like it's clearly trying to hide something. That he's stripped from the waist? Suffered a cruel injury? Paul Merson? Who knows.
