Newcastle United striker Ryan Donaldson is on the verge of joining Tranmere Rovers on loan, according to reports. understands the 20-year-old is set to return to Npower League One, where he spent a spell with Hartlepool United last season, in an effort to further enhance the player's senior progression.

After developing quickly through the Magpies' youth and reserve team ranks, Donaldson has struggled to earn first team opportunities since making his debut for Newcastle United back in 2009.

With only two league appearances to his name for the St. James' Park outfit, Alan Pardew has decided to let the former England U19 international leave the club on a short-term basis.

Donaldson currently sits low down on the list of attacking options for the Newcastle United boss, and it's likely to be to Les Parry's advantage as Tranmere look to enhance their attacking options.

The deal is likely to be completed today, according to the report, leaving Newcastle United to focus on their weekend Barclays Premier League clash at Aston Villa.
