Rovers hope to build on start

Tranmere captain John Welsh is optimistic about Rovers' prospects over the coming season after getting back to winning ways against Wycombe.

Les Parry's side had lost their previous two outings in Npower League One but climbed into tenth position after triumphing 2-0 over the struggling Chairboys.

Goals from Enoch Showunmi and Ash Taylor secured three points at Prenton Park, and Welsh believes the club is heading in the right direction under Parry's stewardship.

"That was the crucial thing, to get a good start and a couple of wins," Welsh told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"The last couple of years I've been here we haven't started as well as we have this year. The club's moving forward and we're moving up the table."

He added: "There was a lot of pressure on the lads and we knew we couldn't lose the game against Wycombe. It probably wasn't our best performance but it was a winning performance.

"If we play like that every game from now until the end of the season and get promoted, I don't think many people would be too disappointed. We just need to keep going and go to Preston next week and see what happens."
