Southend and Plymouth have both been charged by the FA with failing to control their players during their npower League Two fixture at Roots Hall last Saturday.
Eight yellow cards were shown by referee Michael Naylor over the course of an ill-tempered game, and Plymouth midfielder and current caretaker-manager Carl Fletcher was given a straight red for violent conduct after grappling with Michael Timlin.
The incident triggered a mass brawl between the two teams and the clubs have been pulled up for misconduct.
The clubs have been given until 4pm on Friday September 23 to respond to the charge.
It is the second time this season the Shrimpers have been charged by the FA after being involved in a similar incident against Port Vale in August, for which they were fined.
