Poyet relishing Gerrard match-up

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet is hoping his players rise to the challenge of playing against a returning Steven Gerrard in the Carling Cup on Wednesday.

The England midfielder hasn't featured for The Reds since their victory over Manchester United in March, but is reportedly on the brink of a return to the first team following a groin injury.

And Poyet is thrilled to be taking on a player of Gerrard's calibre.

"In terms of playing against him it's not good, of course, but in terms of being a football fan I like the best players to be on the pitch," he said.

"It's going to be nice to see Steven playing again. I am sure he is looking forward to playing football again. We need to deal with that.

"I hope he only plays for an hour or so but it's great.

"When we drew Liverpool it was as if we had won the league again," he added.

"I'm not going to change that, because I want them to feel they have got a great chance to play against a top class team.

"The problem is Thursday morning and Friday morning, to make sure they are ready for Leeds, but that is my job.

"There is no better feeling for a player who was playing a few months ago in League One to have the chance to play here with 22,000 people against Liverpool.

"I'm not going to try to bring down their emotions and feelings, not at all."

Despite defeat to Leicester City on Saturday, five wins from Brighton's opening seven league games has helped The Seagulls make a smooth transition into the Npower Championship after they strolled to the League One title last term.

Meanwhile on Merseyside, two defeats in a row has ruined Liverpool's near perfect start to the season, following three wins from their opening four games.

Sunday's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, which saw both Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel dismissed during a miserable afternoon for The Reds, had provided Kenny Dalglish's side with the worst possible preparation for their tough trip to Sussex.

Liverpool showed no remorse against Exeter City in the previous round, with Pepe Reina, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarex all earning a run outs during a comfortable 3-1 win, and Dalglish insists he'll be treating Wednesday's tie in much the same way.

"We'll have a strong team out at Brighton and expect a difficult game," he said. "We need to show the same attitude we did at Exeter.

"Brighton are doing well after getting promotion and were sitting on top of the table until they lost to Leicester.

"Our players were totally professional when we played at Exeter and we'll have to do the same again if we want to get a result."
