Al Wasl coach Diego Maradona has dismissed claims the club are looking to sign Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka.

The French international forward has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with manager Andre Villas-Boas hinting the player was considering a move away from west London.

Anelka has since denied he's looking to leave the Blues, but speculation has been rife that a lucrative switch to the United Arab Emirates could be on the cards.

However, Argentine legend Maradona has dismissed claims that they are chasing the Chelsea hitman, even though he'd happily have him amongst the club's ranks.

“I am really surprised to hear this. We don’t have anything to do with Anelka,” Maradona said.

“Of course, I wish that he would come and play for us at Al Wasl, but knowing the wages he gets at Chelsea, I don’t think it is ever going to be possible.

“I also believe he is a pillar of the Chelsea team and I don’t think they will allow him to leave.”

Anelka featured for Chelsea in their weekend defeat to Manchester United, and is again expected to be involved against Swansea on Saturday.
