Allardyce wants attacking impetus

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce admitted he was disappointed with the attacking threat posed by his side as they recorded a slim 1-0 win over Peterborough in the npower Championship.

Mark Noble's early penalty was the only difference between the two sides, and although Allardyce was pleased with the victory, he felt his team could have done better in the final third.

"I think the only disappointment we had today was the fact that our approach play and the opportunity to deliver more goals failed us," he said.

"We have had to rely on a penalty to win us the game today and that is the only disappointment, everything else went to plan."

The former Bolton and Newcastle boss has received criticism from some supporters for persisting with a defensive-looking formation, something that irks Allardyce.

He said: "We keep scoring lots of goals playing 4-3-3. You only have to look at the match stats and look at how many times we got in their box and crossed the ball. We just didn't hit the target enough or work their keeper enough."

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson felt his side had let the chance of picking up at least a draw slip through their grasp.

"I really feel it is a lost opportunity to get something out of the game and we have had too many of them and it is getting quite annoying - I'm fed up of people saying 'well played and unlucky', I'm only interested in winning games and we need to have that mentality from the start," he said.

Ferguson also admitted he had hoped to use the huge expectation placed on the West Ham players by their home fans to take something away from the game.

"They get nervous at home, the expectations are huge," he said. "Most people coming here today would have thought it would have been a comfortable game, I always knew we would have a chance because we have a team that can pass the ball."
