Newcastle United and Sunderland are set to do battle for the services of striker Modibo Maiga, according to The Mirror.
The Mali forward was close to joining Newcastle during the January transfer window, but after going on strike at his club Socheaux, the deal failed to go through.
However, now Sunderland, who lost Asamoah Gyan soon after the window closed, are looking for some extra fire power, and could be tempted into a move this winter, despite Newcastle's continued interest.
Newcastle were bitterly disappointed not to complete a deal for Maiga, and are expected to renew their interest in the new year.
The French side are set to demand as much as £7m from both Newcastle and Sunderland, which could spark a bidding war between the two north-east giants.
Sunderland were able to bring in Nicklas Bendtner to bare the loss of Gyan, but a further striker addition may be required.
