Chelsea 'check up' on Arsenal defensive target - reports

Chelsea have joined the race for defender Lewis Dunk, following reports of Arsenal's interest in the Npower Championship starlet, according to The Metro.

The 19-year-old has broken into the Brighton & Hove Albion first team this season following their promotion from League One, and has stared at the Seagulls have won five of their first eight games in the league.

However, Dunk, after being watched by Arsenal during Brighton's Carling Cup tie with Liverpool, is now also a target for Chelsea.


Chelsea scouts were present for Brighton's draw with Leeds United on Friday, while west London rivals Fulham watched Dunk along with Arsenal on Wednesday.

Reports emerged during the summer that Andre Villas-Boas was keen on signing an English centre-back to bolster his Chelsea defence.

Arsenal brought in Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos for strengthen their back line, but may be tempted to invest in youth, like they have so often during their tenure under Arsene Wenger.
