Preston boss Phil Brown hailed the character of his side after they earned a thrilling 4-3 win against Wycombe at Adams Park.

Early goals from Neil Mellor and Iain Hume were cancelled out by Gareth Ainsworth and Scott Donnelly for the hosts. Stuart Beavon gave Wycombe an unlikely half-time lead before Hume and finally Mellor gave Preston a seventh consecutive league win with the only goals of the second half.

The win saw Preston move up to second in League One and Brown said: "We probably thought at 2-0 we could take our foot off the gas and the game was over, but you can't do that."

He added: "Then to concede a goal from a free-kick, a penalty and a corner is very uncharacteristic of us defensively and we decided to change things tactically at half-time and I think it worked for us.

"They are very disappointed because of the way we defended. To go seven on the bounce is a great achievement, but we haven't really done anything yet. We've snuck into the top end of the play-offs and it's very early days but we're showing some good signs.

"The character of the side and the way we are playing football and the way they can change tactically during the course of the game proves we have got the experience out there that can do that."

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock was disappointed with the result, but pleased with the way his side responded to going two goals down.

He said: "Obviously I'm disappointed for the lads. Going from 2-0 down to turn it around and then our own style of play has ended up costing us a point or a result at all from the game. The goals we gave away were naive from our point of view.

"When you go 2-0 down against a top side like that you think it's going to be a very long evening but the lads turned it around and credit to them. It was well worth the entrance fee. It was an excellent game of football from end to end and we gave them a scare and they're a very good side.

"We could have laid down and it could have been a long evening and a hammering but we recovered very well, but got caught with a couple of counter attacks and we came away with nothing."
