Tottenham are reportedly monitoring the situation of Barcelona defender Eric Abidal, as he struggles to reach an agreement over a new contract.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, the north London club have already made contact with Abidal's representatives over a potential move next year.

Harry Redknapp had been keen to add another centre-back to his ranks during the summer due to the persistent knee troubles of Ledley King and the departure of Jonathan Woodgate.

The Spurs boss had attempted to sign Gary Cahill from Bolton from deadline day, and has since lost Michael Dawson for two months to an Achilles problem.

William Gallas has only just regained his fitness after an extended spell on the sidelines, and Spurs are expected to look for defensive reinforcements in January.

Abidal, meanwhile, has made 158 appearances for Barca since his €9 million move fro Lyon in 2007.

The 32-year-old Frenchman missed two months of last season after undergoing successful surgery to remove a tumour on his liver.
