Manchester City are planning a ‘shock’ January move for Edinson Cavani, Talksport claims, with the club considering the Manchester United target the perfect replacement for Carlos Tevez.

Tevez looks set to exit the club after refusing to warm up in a Champions League match on Tuesday night, and Roberto Mancini is already looking for replacements for the January window.

Cavani has long been a target for Manchester United, with the Uruguay international scoring 29 goals in 39 appearances for the Serie A side.

While United had stepped up their chase of Cavani over the last summer, Napoli had insisted they wanted to keep their star on board.

But City feel they may be able to beat United by offering much larger compensation for Cavani’s services.

During the summer, City stole the march on United to sign Samir Nasri, who said he chose to take blue shirt over red because he wanted to be part of the creation of success rather than joining a team that had already won titles.

And no doubt if City decide that Cavani is a good replacement for Tevez, they will hope to outbid their rivals again.
