Harry Redknapp has revealed that Arsenal were in the race for Scott Parker, but ultimately Tottenham was his preferred destination, and to Redknapp’s surprise, the midfielder chose a move to White Hart Lane.

Arsene Wenger was reportedly chasing Parker for some time, but come deadline day, a move never eventuated.

In the meantime, Tottenham swooped for the Arsenal target, and Redknapp believes Parker is an invaluable asset for Spurs, especially after they defeated the Gunners in the north London derby 2-1 yesterday.

“We wanted him and Arsenal were always the team and then Chelsea came in for him and I thought maybe he might go there. But I thought Arsenal might take him,” Redknapp said.

“They nearly took [Gary] Cahill from Bolton. I thought they wanted to take Scott. I could see him going there are one stage.

“I think in the end we went in for Scott when there was no-one else there, really. He is not going to move up north to wherever.

“And I think Tottenham was the move he really wanted.”

Tottenham will hope to continue their good form this weekend against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday, and stake their claim on a top four position on the Barclays Premier League table.
