Joe Wainman is excited by the signing of Daniel James – and felt it was inevitable that the Welshman would eventually join the Yorkshire giants.

What happened with James this summer?

Having started two of Manchester United's opening three Premier League games, including their win at Wolves before the international break, James' short-term future appeared to be at Old Trafford.

He struggled for regular game-time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last term but was in the Norwegian's plans during the early parts of 2021-2022 – with the other start coming against Leeds on the opening day.

However, almost three years after his move to Leeds collapsed right at the very last on deadline day in January 2019, Marcelo Bielsa's side tried their luck again and were successful this time – securing a £25m deal on 31 August.

James' move to Old Trafford makes him Leeds' second most expensive signing ever behind Rodrigo, who the 23-year-old is likely to replace in the side.

What has Wainman said about James' arrival?

Wainman is thrilled, but after the debacle back in 2019, was always confident that the Welshman would end up playing for Leeds.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Yeah, really excited. It felt like it was inevitable that Dan James would eventually sign for Leeds United.

"You can argue the move was the wrong way round – for him to go from Swansea, a mid-table Championship club, to make that step up to Manchester United."

Do Leeds have good reason to be excited?

Will Arteta be sacked soon?! Find out all the latest on The Football Terrace...

Yes. It's been a testing two years for James, although his move to Old Trafford probably came slightly too soon.

Nine goals and as many assists in 74 appearances, with many of those from the bench, is a decent return for a player that was competing with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, though.

Did Luke Ayling score on his Premier League debut for Leeds United?

James should see plenty more game-time at Leeds, and playing alongside Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford, will have every chance of scoring plenty and making even more.

His pace and quality should allow him to feel at home in a devastating counter-attacking Leeds side, so it's not difficult to see why they wanted him.
