Ronda Rousey’s comments about the UFC’s pay structure have resurfaced following Khabib Nurmagomedov’s scathing attack on ring girls, labelling them “the most useless people in the sport.”

Khabib has received a lot of backlash for his comments, with many believing his views to be somewhat sexist.

The 32-year-old, now retired, spoke in a recent press conference, saying: “Look, I don’t want to offend anyone. Ring girls are the most unnecessary people in martial arts. Do they develop the sport? Or do they help people see that it’s the second round now?”

Ring girls have been a staple of boxing and mixed martial arts for decades now; the biggest fights we’ve witnessed were all supported by them. They have become a tradition of combat sports, but their purpose can divide opinion.

Some believe their presence is nothing more than the objectification of women, whilst others believe they add to a spectacle.

Five years ago, former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey publicly shared her opinion on the topic, slamming popular ring girl Arianny Celeste.

The 2008 Olympian, who was the first ever female to sign for the UFC, voiced her discontent at the fact that Celeste had been paid more than most of the female fighters in the UFC.

“Either the ring card girls are paid too much, or the fighters aren’t paid enough,” said Rousey. “You think her walking around in circles around the two guys or two girls out there fighting for their lives is worth more? She wouldn’t have a job if it wasn’t for them.”

Rousey’s comments reemerged after comparisons were made between her statement and Khabib’s.

At the time, Rousey was branded as a “bully” by Celeste, whilst Khabib has also faced a lot of criticism for his stance on what has become a controversial subject.
