Sam Kerr, Beth Mead: 6 standout players from latest WSL results

Sam Kerr and Beth Mead

The 2021/22 Women's Super League season is already proving to be a thrilling spectacle and we're only two weeks in.

A total of 22 goals were scored across the weekend – including a stunning team performance from Brighton & Hove Albion, who beat Birmingham City 5-0.

Arsenal and Chelsea breezed to 4-0 wins against Reading and Everton respectively, while Tottenham Hotspur delivered a shock awakening to Manchester City with their 2-1 victory.

Despite a multitude of spectacular performances across the board, GiveMeSport Women has selected one player from each fixture who really stood out in the most recent round of results.

Remi Allen (West Ham vs Aston Villa)

It's now two in two for Aston Villa summer signing Remi Allen thanks to her heroic equaliser against West Ham on Saturday.

The Irons kicked off the weekend in style, taking the lead after just eight minutes through Adriana Leon. And it certainly looked to be a dream result for the East Londoners, until former Reading star Allen snatched a point in the second minute of stoppage time.

For a team that narrowly avoided relegation last season, Villa are off to a great start as they currently sit fifth in the table.

Sam Kerr (Chelsea vs Everton)

Chelsea's opening week loss was more than rectified with their winning performance against Everton on Sunday.

Unfortunately for the Toffees, they were handed yet another 4-0 defeat as the WSL champions ran riot at Kingsmeadow.

Sam Kerr was responsible for half of the goals scored in the lunchtime kick-off, finally settling back into her usual Chelsea form after an intense Olympic schedule.

Martha Thomas (Leicester vs Man United)

Although Man United put in a strong team display as a whole against Leicester, the plaudits go to Martha Thomas, who needed just two minutes in her second game for the Reds to open up her account.

The pressure has been on the forward since signing from West Ham this summer as she takes the place of Lauren James.

But despite playing the role as super sub under Marc Skinner, Thomas is still making sure she is noticed in her new team. Based off this form, we could be looking at a very fruitful season for the No.9.

Inessa Kaagman (Birmingham vs Brighton)

Brighton produced perhaps the performance of the weekend after they dismantled Birmingham with a 5-0 win.

Five different players got their names on the scoresheet against the Blues but we've gone with Inessa Kaagman as the standout player for Brighton.

The midfielder picked up a goal and an assist at St Andrew's, taking her into third in the WSL top scorers list for the season. Only Beth Mead and Sam Kerr have contributed more to their team so far.

Kaagman is once again showing how important she is to this Albion side as they eye a potential top five finish.

Beth Mead (Reading vs Arsenal)

Beth Mead has wasted no time in getting herself involved in the action for Arsenal this season.

The winger now has five goalscoring contributions in two games after her goal and two assists against Reading on Sunday.

While the Lioness did have an impressive 2020/21 season, picking up four goals and eight assists, she already looks set to better that tally.

Watch out Kerrby, it looks like Arsenal duo Meadema could be muscling their way in.

Becky Spencer (Man City vs Spurs)

The final fixture of the weekend was an 18:45 kick-off between Man City and Spurs, and it was definitely worth the wait.

Drama unfolded in Manchester after the North Londoners stunned their opponents with a 2-1 win. A controversial own goal contributed to the winner after Rosella Ayane escaped being penalised for her blatant handball in the build up.

But the nature of the second goal shouldn't overshadow the performance of Becky Spencer. Faced against Lauren Hemp, Ellen White and other world-class talent for City, the Spurs goalkeeper stood strong in her net and made six saves to help her side to their second consecutive WSL win.
