Fernando Alonso has offered his verdict on the crash between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Formula 1's two title contenders tangled once more at the first chicane of the famous Monza circuit during the race, with both of them retiring from the Grand Prix there and then.

Indeed, in the time since, many have offered their view on the incident and where the blame should head, with the stewards opting to give Verstappen a three-place grid penalty for the Russian Grand Prix in a couple of weeks from now.

For Alonso, though, it was a racing incident more than anything else, with him explaining his reasons for thinking so to the Spanish version of Motorsport.com:

"They are two champions who always fight on the limit. I've just seen the incident, and it seems that their position in relation to the kerb was unfortunate.

"I think Lewis tried to go wide in the first corner to force Max to cut the corner. Max didn't cut the corner, he stayed on the outside, but then couldn't do the second corner on the inside. They both did what they had to do, they were both racing and it wasn't much different to the five or six incidents we saw at the start."

Certainly, this incident has added further fuel to what is an already incredible fire in terms of a championship battle and the final third of this season looks set to provide one of the great title run-ins.
