Journalist Luke Hatfield has heaped praise on Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey after his recent performance against Chelsea.

What did Hatfield say about Ramsey?

Villa slipped to their second league defeat of the season on Saturday when they were beaten 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The scoreline arguably flattered the Blues, though, and there were a number of impressive individual performances from the visitors.

Hatfield singled out Ramsey as a player who particularly caught his eye during his 56 minutes on the pitch.

Talking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "Jacob Ramsey’s kind of followed suit with a number of Villa players over previous seasons in showing improvement. He’s in his second season really, and early on this season he’s been fantastic, and particularly first half against Chelsea, I thought he was phenomenal.”

How good has Ramsey been this season?

Hatfield believes that Ramsey's been "fantastic", and the statistics indicate that he has a point.

Ramsey has earned an average WhoScored rating of 6.67 so far this season, which puts him behind just five of his teammates. John McGinn (7.28) is the only central midfielder to earn a higher mark than him.

The 20-year-old has shown that he is not afraid to get stuck in, making six tackles - only two other Villa players have made more - while he has also completed three key passes. This once again puts him in the top three in this category when compared with the rest of the Villa squad.

Is Ramsey ready to establish himself in Villa's starting XI?

The Midlands-based club tried to sign a central midfielder this summer, as they made an audacious bid to land Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse, and they were also linked with Harry Winks.

However, they failed to land either of these players, meaning that there does seem to be a starting berth available in the middle of the park alongside first-team regulars McGinn and Douglas Luiz.

Ramsey only started six games last season in the top-flight, so is clearly lacking experience, but he has enjoyed an unexpected rise in recent weeks.

He has started two of Villa's first four league matches, and performed well in both of them, helping his side to a 2-0 win over Newcastle, and then emerging as one of the shining lights from their loss against Chelsea.

If he can build on his display against the reigning Champions League winners, there is no reason why Ramsey cannot establish himself in the Villa starting XI this season.
