Messi vs Ronaldo: Sky Sports forgot Argentine's Copa America success in comparison

Lionel Messi with the Copa America trophy

Much of the conversation on this week's Monday Night Football was about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last Saturday, the Portuguese superstar made his Manchester United comeback in the team's 4-1 victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford and he predictably scored a brilliant brace.

So it was no wonder that both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher spent a considerable amount of time discussing the 36-year-old on Sky Sports.

Neville was, of course, full of praise for Ronaldo and even stated that he believes the United striker is the greatest footballer in history ahead of Lionel Messi.

The former Red Devils defender's reasoning was the fact that the Portugal international is capable of scoring all types of goals, particularly headers and strikes with his weak foot.

To try and emphasise his point, Neville brought up a graphic comparing Ronaldo and Messi's goal records, as well as their trophy collections.

But when the comparison of their major honours popped up on television screens around the world, there was a noticeable error.

Sky Sports' graphic stated that Ronaldo has won two international trophies with Portugal, while Messi has failed to win a single one with Argentina.

Clearly, the Copa America doesn't count as a major honour anymore, but the UEFA Nations League does...

That's not a great look, is it?

Unsurprisingly, the gaffe from Sky Sports attracted a lot of attention on social media, with Gary Lineker - a known Messi fan - posting a rather sarcastic reaction on Twitter.

Lineker's reaction

As well as forgetting Messi guided Argentina to their first Copa America success since 1993, Sky Sports seem to think that the Paris Saint-Germain superstar only won three Champions Leagues with Barcelona.

In fact, the 34-year-old won four, as he was part of the Blaugrana squad that triumphed in the competition way back in 2005/06.

To say it wasn't a great night for the Sky Sports Statto team would be an understatement...
