Presenter Joe Wainman has had his say on whether Marcelo Bielsa should use Raphinha as a No. 10 this season at Leeds United.

Why might Bielsa want to use Raphinha as a No. 10?

Raphinha spent the majority of last term operating from the right wing, and did so effectively, as he registered 15 goal contributions in the top-flight.

However, Leeds signed another winger on deadline day, Daniel James, and with the club also having Jack Harrison in their ranks, they have three wide players capable of performing at the highest level.

Therefore, it has been suggested that Raphinha could be moved into a more central position to allow Bielsa to get all three players on the pitch at the same time.

What has Wainman said about this proposal?

When asked whether Bielsa should give Raphinha a new role in the team to accommodate James, Wainman did not seem convinced.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: “This is the big question. There’s been a lot of talk of Raphinha moving into a 10, or more centrally, which could happen, but I’m not so sure. Going on Bielsa’s previous comments, he mentioned how he’s always better from the right cutting in, he’s a right winger predominantly.”

Is it time for Bielsa to switch things up?

Leeds took the Premier League by storm last year, playing an eye-catching brand of attacking football that helped them finish inside the top half. They have not hit those heights so far this year, though.

The team have picked up just two points from their opening four league fixtures, and have conceded 11 goals in these matches. Moreover, they have only scored four goals themselves, and seem to be lacking that spark in the final third that was so often present in 2020/21.

Raphinha and Bamford have netted just once each this season, while Harrison is yet to be directly involved in a goal. It appears that they may benefit from switching things up, and one way they could do this is by bringing James into the starting line-up, and moving Raphinha into the No. 10 position.

Bielsa tried sticking with his tried and trusted front three of Raphinha, Harrison and Bamford on Sunday, but it did not work as his side were soundly beaten 3-0 by Liverpool at Elland Road.

This could be the time to try something different, and playing James, Raphinha and Harrison together on Friday night against Newcastle behind Bamford could be exactly what is required to kick-start Leeds' season.
