Joleon Lescott has given his thoughts on whether his former club Manchester City should have tried to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski last month.
What did Lescott say about City potentially going after Lewandowski?
City were interested in two high-profile strikers this summer in the form of Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo. The latter opted to go to Manchester United in the end, though, while Kane stayed at Tottenham.
However, a third forward option emerged in the final days of the transfer window as Lewandowski was keen on a new challenge away from Bayern, according to reports.
When asked whether City should have made a concerted effort to land Lewandowski, Lescott admitted the Polish attacker would have been a brilliant signing for Pep Guardiola's side but conceded that Bayern would likely have been reluctant to allow him to leave so late in the window.
He told GIVEMESPORT: "It would have been a great acquisition if we’d got him but I’m not sure Bayern would have left themselves in the lurch that late in the window. I think Pep spoke about there being two or three players able to pick their destinations and where they want to play, and he mentioned Cristiano and Messi being two, and I’m sure he meant Lewandowski being the other.
“But again, Bayern, I don’t think they’d have let him go that late in the window not having been able to replace him.”
How has Lewandowski started this season?
Lewandowski has been on fire once more at the start of this season. The 33-year-old has netted 302 goals in his Bayern career so far, and eight of those have come in the opening five games of the current campaign.
He bagged a brace in the Super Cup clash with Borussia Dortmund in August, and is currently on a run of scoring in every match for his club this term. In his latest outing, he stroked home a penalty as Bayern picked up a dominant 4-1 win over RB Leipzig.

Could Lewandowski have led Pep's City to Champions League glory?
Despite enjoying major success over the last decade domestically, winning five league titles during this period, City are still yet to conquer Europe.
They came desperately close to breaking their duck last season, only to be pipped to the post by Chelsea in the final. In that game, Guardiola's men seemed to lack that killer instinct in front of goal, which ultimately saw them slip to a 1-0 defeat. Things could have been very different if they'd been able to call on Lewandowski to bail them out of trouble.
City have been crying out for a prolific goalscorer to replace Sergio Aguero in recent months, and Lewandowski would appear to be the ideal fit, especially given that he has worked with Guardiola before.
They have not managed to get the 6 foot 1 striker, though, and that could make all the difference in their pursuit of Champions League glory this year.
