Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo - who is better?

We’ve been having the same debate for more than a decade now and still, we’re no closer to finding a definitive answer.

Yeah but Ronaldo has scored more goals. Yeah but Messi has won more Ballon d’Ors. Yeah but Ronaldo has done it in different countries. Yeah but Messi is technically better.

In truth, it’s a bit tiresome listening to fans debate which one is better and we should just appreciate the two greatest players to have ever played the game.

However, if anyone is going to make the debate fascinating, it’s Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.

You wouldn’t expect the two Sky Sports to sink to Messi vs Ronaldo debates on Monday Night Football but that’s exactly what happened.

Predictably, Neville was in the red corner fighting Ronaldo’s corner while Carragher had Messi’s backing.

Who would come out on top?

Well, according to many football fans on Twitter, there was only one winner.

Neville went first and claimed Ronaldo is the greatest mainly because he scores different types of goals.

However, Carragher hit back and destroyed Neville’s argument. The Liverpool legend admitted that, yes, Ronaldo might be the best all-round goalscorer but Carragher argued that’s irrelevant. It ended with Neville saying Ronaldo was a "penalty box striker".

Ignoring the fact Sky Sports missed out Messi’s Copa America victory, the fact he has four Champions League titles and decided not to show assists, it seems Carragher and Messi camp out on top.

While Carragher may well have won the argument, it does seem a little bit petty that two of the best pundits in Premier League football are arguing over which player I better.

They’re both at the end of their incredible careers and we won’t be able to enjoy either of them for too much longer.

Let’s just enjoy them while they last.
