There were a whole host of sports stars at last night’s Met Gala in New York City.Chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the event is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.After a one year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Met Gala returned with an American Fashion theme.Actor Timothee Chalomet, musician Billie Eilish and tennis star Naomi Osaka were all appointed as co-chairs for the fundraiser.Osaka has announced she’s taking an indefinite break from tennis to focus on herself, but the 23-year-old still dazzled at last night’s event.ENTER GIVEAWAYThe Japanese star sported a custom corseted Louis Vuitton outfit, with her dress topped with a silk-mix cape featuring 22 ruffles, 18 metres of leather satin and a 50-metre silk hem.Having enlisted the help of the French house’s creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière and her sister Mari to design her outfit –– the result was something that reflected Osaka’s heritage.

A bright-red obi belt was a nod to her Japanese roots, while the bold shades reflected the Caribbean island of her ancestors. 

Meanwhile, there were plenty of other tennis players in attendance, including Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters.

Venus wore a red gown with a long train, while the Russian turned up in a gold dress alongside fiancé Alexander Gilkes.

Serena’s outfit was particularly eye-catching, with the 39-year-old rocking a pink fluffy cape over a silver, red star Gucci jumpsuit.

Remarkably, Sharapova actually posted an Instagram story of herself posing alongside the Williams sisters, despite her long-standing feud with Serena.

The last time the two appeared to enjoy each other’s company in public was during the draw ceremony for the 2012 WTA YEC in Istanbul, when they were sat next to each other.

Their rivalry dates back more than 17 years, having first started when Sharapova beat Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final.

“I think Serena hated me for being the skinny kid who beat her, against all odds at Wimbledon”, the Russian wrote in her autobiography.

Fresh from her US Open victory, Britain’s Emma Raducanu also turned up at the event –– wearing a black and white Chanel outfit.

The 18-year-old defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez at Flushing Meadows on Saturday to become the first qualifier to ever win a Grand Slam title and the first British woman to do so for 44 years.

Raducanu’s historic win has prompted many famous figures to publicly praise the young teenager, including the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Having shared a video of herself coming across her own billboard on Monday, tennis’ newest star was rubbing shoulders with some of Hollywood’s elite at the event last night and will surely be a household name for years to come.

Elsewhere, US football star Megan Rapinoe nailed the American theme by turning up in a bright red silk Sergio Hudson pantsuit, with a royal blue blouse, complete with white stars.

Gymnast Simone Biles also made a bold entrance –– being carried up the museum steps by six men as she wore an 88-pound embroidered gown with a huge train.
