FIFA 22: Are EA Fixing the Fullback Meta?

Are EA going to fix the Fullback Meta in FIFA 22?

One of the biggest issues that has plagued FIFA Ultimate Team is the ‘fullback meta’ and the pacing issues with centre backs in the game.

A number of players in FUT would use fullbacks in the CB position in the game, as an LB, LWB, RB or RWB is far more likely to have a decent amount of pace during play.

Contrast this to the likes of Per Mertesacker, who previously had stats of around 30-40 pace, and the standard CBs in the game were getting obliterated by the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gervinho in previous iterations of the game.

Although using a fullback in the centre back position slightly affects chemistry, the benefit far outweighs the risk for players on FUT currently.

Pace is such a hugely important issue in the FIFA meta, and gamers are constantly looking at ways to get ahead of the pack when it comes to competitive play.

This has led a number of fans to ask if EA are ‘fixing’ the fullback meta this season and giving CB players a better Pace rating to be worth putting at the heart of their defence.

Has EA fixed the fullback meta for FIFA 22?

From what we’ve seen in the recent ratings leaks, it does appear as though EA has had the pacing issue at the forefront of deciding some of the new overalls.

Pepe in particular is getting a 14+ pace upgrade for his base card in Ultimate Team this season, and Jan Vertonghen has an even greater upgrade at +17.

Pepe’s pace now sits at 80 in FIFA 22 for this base card, the highest rating in that stat he has ever had for a standard gold card in Ultimate Team. Vertonghen is now up to 76, and even though his overall is down to 81, he is finally viable as a CB option in the game.

Hopefully other CB options will also have improved pace for this seasons’ iteration of FIFA, although these will not be confirmed until the full list of ratings are released for the game, which are anticipated to be as part of the Ultimate Team companion app.
