Aston Villa correspondent Luke Hatfield has outlined what Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins must do in order to reach the level of Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku.

What happened in Saturday's match between Chelsea and Aston Villa?

Watkins' and Lukaku's sides came up against one another on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, and it was the Blues who came out on top as they cruised to a 3-0 victory.

The Villa forward, who is valued at £28.8m by Transfermarkt, had six shots in the game - more than any other player on the pitch - but failed to find the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Lukaku had just two attempts on goal but made them count, as he buried both chances either side of a well-placed finish by Mateo Kovacic.

What has Hatfield said about Watkins?

Following that match, Hatfield compared the performances of the two attackers, and stated that Watkins needs to be more prolific in front of goal if he wants to take his game to the next level.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “You look at Lukaku’s performance, and I think he only had like 25 touches, one of the fewest for any outfield player, but obviously got them two goals, and I think that’s what Ollie Watkins really needs to work on now. Just being able to take goals and take chances, not necessarily with three or four of them, but if you only get one chance a game, you’ve got to try and make sure you take it.”

Can Watkins ever reach Lukaku's level?

It certainly won't be easy as Lukaku appears to be at the peak of his powers right now.

The 28-year-old netted 64 goals in 95 appearances during his two seasons at Inter Milan, and he has continued his stunning goalscoring form at Chelsea, scoring three times in his opening three league matches for the club. His international record is also phenomenal, as the 6 foot 3 striker has registered 67 goals in 100 caps for Belgium.

Watkins has taken a very different path to the Premier League, and it ought to be remembered that he is only just starting his second campaign in England's top-flight. Therefore, he is undoubtedly playing catch-up when it comes to following in Lukaku's footsteps.

Still, he made a promising start to life in the Premier League last term, scoring 14 goals, which suggests that he has plenty of talent.

He must now build on that, and his aim should be to work on his finishing so that he can consistently hit the 20-goal mark over the coming years. If he can start to do that, then he will have closed the gap to Lukaku, and proven that he can also be a top-class centre forward.
