Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer endured a difficult night as his Champions League campaign got underway against Young Boys.

While, clearly, a loss in the opening group stage is far from dramatic, United were knocked out at this stage last season after dropping points to Istanbul Basaksehir, another team they would have been expected to beat.

There were, of course, mitigating circumstances.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka's sending off in the first-half made the evening much more difficult than it should have been, while Jesse Lingard's calamitous backpass was a shocking individual mistake.

Still, given the concerns as to whether or not Solskjaer is tactically astute enough to win major trophies, the loss is unlikely to be taken lightly by his doubters.

For his part, however, Solskjaer claimed a penalty decision that went against Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the major reasons as to why United did not come away with three points.

After Ronaldo had put the away side ahead with his third goal in two games since moving back to the club, the 36-year-old was brought down in the box by a defender when seemingly through on goal.

You can watch the incident below:

The referee waved away the appeal, much to Ronaldo's chagrin, and the United manager suggested the officials had simply been too scared to send the defender - already on a yellow - off.

"He [Ronaldo] should have had a penalty and it should have been a sending off the other way," he said (via The Daily Mirror).

“But he probably didn't give it as he'd have had to send him off and that's sometimes what you get with young refs.”

Despite his goal, Ronaldo was taken off in the second-half in what turned out to be an evening to forget.
