Lewis Hamilton & Max Verstappen Italian GP crash: Astonishing new footage emerges

This year’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza witnessed a ghastly incident between Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship contenders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Fortunately, both drivers got out of the accident unharmed, but things could’ve been a lot worse if not for the sport’s safety measures.

During the 23rd lap, Hamilton was in the pits for medium tyres. While the Brit was exiting and going into Turn 1, he was side-by-side with Verstappen. However, the Dutchman drove over the Brit’s car, making contact with his helmet before eventually coming to a halt.

F1 have since tweeted a video showing another angle of the accident and it just proves how dangerous it was and could’ve been if not for the Halo on Hamilton’s car.

Take a look at the new footage below.

Sky Sports have also tweeted out new footage of the collision, an extended version which starts with Hamilton in the pit.

Both drivers were unable to finish the race, but luckily nothing severe happened to either of them.

Speaking of the incident, Hamilton said: “We were obviously just ahead, we had a bit of a slow stop, came out, braking into Turn 1.

“I made sure I left a car’s width on the outside and I was ahead going into the corner, and next thing I know, I guess Max went over the second kerb or something like that – he obviously knew he wasn’t going to make the corner – and he drove into me.

“So, next thing you know, he’s just on top of me. So, definitely unfortunate and we’ll speak to the stewards after this I’m sure.”

The stewards blamed Verstappen for the incident and gave him a three-grid penalty for the next race in Sochi.

Daniel Ricciardo eventually went on to win the race, thus giving McLaren their first win since 2012, when Jenson Button triumphed in Brazil. Lando Norris came second, while Valtteri Bottas finished third.

Verstappen leads the standings so far with 226.5 points, with Hamilton just five points behind him.

The next race is the Russian Grand Prix which will take place in Sochi later this month.
