Gutierrez ready for international duty

Jonas Gutierrez is hoping to show he is still worthy of his place in the Argentine national squad, after the 26-year-old was selected for international duty this weekend.

Gutierrez has been in fine form so far this season, and despite Newcastle losing some big players in the summer transfer period, the winger has contributed to keeping his side in a shock top four position after seven matches.

And, as Gutierrez gets ready for Argentina to take on Venezuala on October 11, the star says he won’t let the heavy travel schedule affect his top-class form.

“I have to focus on Argentina,” he told the Journal.

“It is always really hard to be in the squad, so you have to do your best whenever you get the opportunity.

“First, you have to do it for your club, and you do that game by game.

“Then, when you have the [international] games, if you play one minute or 90 minutes you have to be really good because you know that when you get an opportunity you have to impress.”

Gutierrez scored last weekend for Newcastle to take the side to a 2-1 win over Wolves and keep their unbeaten run alive. And the Argentine said that while he was pleased to get on the board for the Toon, gaining three points was far more important.

“I am happy about my goal, but more important was the team taking the three points,” he explained.

“We went there to get three points and I don’t care who scores.

“If I can score then OK I am happy with that, but the more important is the fact the team won.

“You enjoy it when the team keeps the ball.

“Games like this are difficult to enjoy because you have the space but you do not have the ball and have to work hard in defence.

“Sometimes you have to do that, though, I do not have a problem with that.”
