FIFA 22 is just around the corner and one of the most popular elements of the game is the Ultimate Team mode - but is it free to play?
Ultimate Team, or FUT, has been around for over a decade and has a strong community of players and content creators focused purely on the one element of every new FIFA iteration.
If you’re a new player to the series and do not know what Ultimate Team is or the cost implications, we’ve put together a small guide.
It’s worth bearing in mind that if you want to play FIFA 22 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S or Nintendo Switch, then you will need to purchase the relevant online pass for each of the consoles to get online.
Once you have access to play online, you can get to Ultimate Team via the main menu of FIFA 22.
Can I play FUT for free?
The actual Ultimate Team mode is free-to-play, with anyone who owns a copy of FIFA 22 getting the opportunity to create their own team and compete online.
So, actually getting into FIFA Ultimate Team is free; however, one of the big elements and selling points of the mode is in-game Packs.
Packs can be purchased via coins gained through gameplay or via FIFA Points that can be purchased through the online store of whichever console or PC version you are playing.
The cost of FIFA Points can vary across consoles and can be used to buy different levels of Packs during the season of FIFA.
There are different levels of Packs that players can purchase, from Bronze, Silver, Gold and speciality packs that are released throughout the year.
Many content creators have a huge following due to Pack Opening videos and their reactions, as the chances of getting a massive card are quite low.
Purchasing Packs is a gamble, and a lot of players prefer to ‘grind’ out coins playing the game and purchase players through the Transfer Market within FUT.
The Transfer Market can only be used with coins that are earned in the game, so you do not need to pay any ‘real’ legal tender to get players/consumables via that method.
It’s true that FIFA Ultimate Team can be a ‘pay to win’ system, with players willing to part with a lot of cash early getting better cards.
However, with the Squad Building Challenges and ability to play in lower leagues against suitable competition and level of player, it can still be an enjoyable experience for players who don’t want to spend beyond the £59.99 outlay for the game itself.
