Lionel Messi will not remember his first start for Paris Saint-Germain very fondly.

The Argentine's team were held to a 1-1 draw by Club Brugge in the Champions League and if anything, the scoreline flattered the Ligue 1 outfit.

PSG were absolutely woeful for much of the game and the hosts actually attempted more shots on goal.

Messi played the full 90 minutes in Belgium, but was unable to really influence proceedings alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

The former Barcelona man did hit the post with a lovely curling effort in the first half, however, that was as good as it got for him really and he even picked up a yellow card in the 72nd-minute.

It really was a struggle for the six-time Ballon d'Or winner and during the second half, it appeared PSG players were reluctant to help Messi in his attempt to find a winner.

Like he's done for much of his career, the little magician dropped deep to pick up the ball and looked to kickstart an attack after producing a lovely piece of close control to deceive an opposing player.

But there was no movement from his teammates whatsoever, which resulted in Messi having to turn back and then play a simple sideways pass - something he rarely ever does on a football pitch.

Take a look at footage of the incident here...

Video: Messi given no help vs Club Brugge

That's really not a great look for PSG.

Messi has been known to do it all on his own for Barcelona and Argentina in the past, but he does need some help occasionally.

The onus will now be on manager Mauricio Pochettino to find a way for his team to get the best out of Messi sooner rather than later.

He may have arrived on a free transfer, but PSG are paying Messi an enormous amount in wages and that means the club need him to hit the ground running.
